What Makes a Material Precious?

Does preciousness have to begin with the material?

Some materials are precious because they are rare.

Beauty is another matter.

Nature produces beautiful things in extraordinary abundance. Wood can carry remarkable colour and pattern. A pebble shaped by water can have a surface and proportion worth looking at. Shell can produce extraordinary iridescence. None of these things becomes more beautiful because there is less of it, nor less beautiful because there is more.

Yet jewellery has traditionally given its greatest attention to materials in which beauty and rarity meet.

Gold. Diamonds. Rubies. Emeralds. Sapphires.

Their physical qualities make them desirable. Their relative scarcity helps make them precious.

The two ideas are easily allowed to become one.

They are not.

Jewellery has an unusual capacity to expose the difference.

It can take a material we barely notice, isolate it, work it, place it beside materials we have already agreed are precious and ask us to look again.

The material may not have changed very much.

Our perception of it has.

The precious frame

Consider a piece of wood.

Outside jewellery, we understand it through familiarity. We know its grain can be beautiful, but we encounter wood constantly. Abundance makes it ordinary.

Place it at the centre of a jewel and something changes.

Its grain is no longer background. It has been selected. Its precise section matters. Its colour is considered against the metal beside it. Its irregularity becomes part of a composition in which everything else is deliberate.

Diamonds surrounding it do not make the wood intrinsically more precious.

They give it a precious frame.

The conventions of jewellery tell us to pay attention to what has been placed inside that frame.

And suddenly we do.

This is one of the more compelling things jewellery can accomplish. Its transformation is not confined to materials. It can transform the attention we give them.

Materials move between worlds

The history of jewellery is full of materials crossing boundaries.

Mother-of-pearl now feels entirely at home in fine jewellery. Its iridescence appears so naturally in watches, pendants, bracelets and decorative elements that there is little reason to stop and ask whether it belongs.

It simply does.

Titanium has travelled a different route.

Its associations were once overwhelmingly industrial and technological. Its lightness, strength and resistance to corrosion made it useful in aerospace, engineering and medicine. Jewellery makers discovered that those same characteristics could solve entirely different problems.

For Wallace Chan, titanium became a material capable of supporting extraordinary scale without the weight that conventional precious metals would impose. He spent years developing ways to work with it, eventually making its strength, lightness and colour part of his artistic vocabulary.

The material was not brought into jewellery because somebody decided titanium should suddenly be considered equivalent to gold.

It entered because its properties made new forms possible.

Once the forms existed, our perception of the material followed.

There is no fixed hierarchy

Hemmerle has approached the question from another direction.

Important gemstones appear against iron, bronze, aluminium, copper and wood. The house describes its philosophy as giving little hierarchy to materials, allowing unusual metals and rare stones to coexist according to the needs of the design.

This can produce combinations that initially seem almost inverted.

A highly valuable gemstone may sit in a material whose raw market value is negligible by comparison.

But visually, the relationship can make perfect sense.

Darkened iron can change the way a diamond appears. Bronze can bring warmth to a coloured stone. Aluminium can be anodised into colours that respond to gemstones while remaining exceptionally light. Hemmerle devoted an entire project to exploring aluminium for precisely these qualities.

The inexpensive material is not trying to compete with the gemstone.

It is doing something the more expensive material may not have done as well.

The ordinary can become central

Wood provides another example.

Messika has used ziricote wood alongside diamonds and gold in high jewellery. Boucheron has worked with rattan, burnt wood and pebbles. Elsewhere, contemporary jewellers have explored aluminium, titanium, ceramic, rock crystal and materials borrowed from industries far removed from jewellery.

The most successful examples have little to do with novelty for novelty's sake.

An unusual material earns its place when removing it would diminish the idea.

Wood introduces grain, warmth and opacity.

Titanium permits lightness, colour and scale.

Aluminium offers another relationship with weight and colour.

A pebble brings a surface created by nature without any expectation that it would one day become jewellery.

The jeweller notices a quality already there and changes the conditions under which we encounter it.

Sometimes that requires extraordinary technical intervention.

Sometimes it requires remarkably little.

Both can alter perception.

What was unconventional yesterday

There is also something temporary about the category itself.

Materials become familiar.

Mother-of-pearl is a good example. Ceramic, too, has become sufficiently established in contemporary jewellery and watchmaking that its presence rarely needs explanation. Titanium is considerably less surprising today than it would have been several decades ago.

The boundary moves because jewellery develops its own conventions.

A material enters experimentally. Designers learn what it can do. Techniques improve. Audiences become accustomed to seeing it. Eventually the surprise disappears and the material becomes part of the vocabulary.

This tells us something about preciousness too.

Our perception of materials is not formed by geology alone.

Culture participates.

So does history.

So does design.

Beauty without scarcity

None of this makes rarity irrelevant.

A fine natural gemstone remains rare regardless of what surrounds it. Certain combinations of size, colour, clarity and origin are extraordinarily difficult to find. Their scarcity is real, and it contributes to their value.

But rarity should not be mistaken for beauty itself.

An abundant material can be beautiful.

A rare material can be unremarkable.

And an object made from inexpensive materials can represent extraordinary creativity and craftsmanship.

Jewellery gives these different qualities a place to meet.

A diamond can be admired partly because nature produced so few examples like it.

A piece of wood can be admired because someone noticed something in its grain that deserved attention.

One begins with scarcity.

The other begins with seeing.

Learning to look

Perhaps this is why unusual materials can be so compelling in jewellery.

They interrupt recognition.

We already know how we are supposed to respond to a diamond. A ruby arrives with centuries of cultural meaning attached to it. Gold announces itself before the design has done anything at all.

A pebble offers no such instruction.

The jeweller has to make us look.

And when the object succeeds, something ordinary becomes temporarily unfamiliar. We notice colour, texture, transparency, weight or form without relying on the usual hierarchy to tell us how valuable our attention should be.

The material has not necessarily become precious.

Something more interesting may have happened.

Jewellery has shown us what was worth seeing in it.
